Sponsor a senior

The most common request for a dog is a young, housebroken, smooth, red female. While that sounds like a great combination, what about all the other combinations of age, sex and coat? There are plenty of other choices that will make the greatest addition to your family, but, the most overlooked dogs are the seniors. Why you ask? We don't know why. Perhaps adopters feel they don't want a dog that may not live much longer. Perhaps they feel a senior can't play the way a young dog can or perhaps they don't want to take care of an older dog. We hear all the reasons but to those of us who foster seniors, we say "patooey."

Seniors are wonderful and in most cases truly are the easiest dogs to have around. They often blend into a home seamlessly and adjust very well. They're quiet and calm and in so many cases actually seem to appreciate having a nice cozy home to call their own and reward you with tons of love they still have to give.

Below are some of our seniors who are up for adoption or who are in permanent foster care. We've got a program called "Sponsor a Senior" and it allows our visitors to "virtually adopt" one of our older dogs. Your "virtual adoption" can be anything from a donation to a friendly note you write to the foster home. As a virtual adopter you don't have to worry about the maintenance of a dog but will feel good that you are a friend to a senior as well as contributing to their long term care.  Seniors rock!

Daisy Mae
Age: 14 (in 2007)
B/T longhaired
Daisy Mae - permanent foster. Read her bio

In 2004 Daisy Mae was taken from the local shelter by rescue because she was too old to adopt and had too many medical issues. Daisy has severe heart issues, chronic skin issues and does suffer from grand mal seizures. She may be medically "challenged" but she makes up for it by being a wonderful little dog who is quiet, obedient and enjoys her crate. She does need special food to control her allergies and will have to stay on medication for her heart and her seizures. Daisy would love for you to be her sponsor or if not, a friend. She does enjoy hearing from the public.

Chip
Age: 13
Wild Boar smooth
Chip - available for adoption. Read his bio

Chip is a loving, friendly senior who is looking for a loving, stable home to spend his twilight years. Chip is being treated for some eye concerns, but otherwise is in good health. He is not aggressive, good with other dogs and cats and is very low maintenance. A warm spot on the couch and a lightweight blanket over him is his very spot to hang out. He is mobile, house trained, friendly to humans and other dogs on walks and at the offish dog parks. Chip is a cuddler who is content to just relax and would be wonderful with a owner who is able to give him a lot of petting and the comforts for his elder years.

PJ
Age: 11
B/T smooth
PJ - available for adoption. Read her bio

Little PJ is deaf, has cataracts, is incontinent (she is on medication to control this though) has a bit of cognitive disorder, BUT, she is spry, alert and loves to chase you around the house. You must not let her shortcomings dissuade you in considering her as a member of your family even though it sounds like a lot for one little dog. This is why CCDR needs sponsors, so we can continue to help long term foster dogs like PJ. If you'd like to sponsor her, thank you. If you'd like to just write a note to her, that's fine too.

Nathan
Age: 11
Red longhaired
Nathan - available for adoption. Read his bio

Nathan had to have significant dental surgery when he was brought into rescue. He has recovered well from it and is doing fine now. Nathan needs an experienced dachshund owner and a fenced back yard because he is a bit flighty. He is more comfortable around women than men so a home where a woman would dote on him would be good and no other dogs. He tolerates other dogs but truly wishes to be an only dog. Nathan would love to know someone wishes to sponsor him but if not, how about a friendly note?

Dash
Age: 12
Red smooth
Dash - available for adoption. Read his bio

This very sweet old gentleman would make a welcome addition to any home. He's a cuddle bug who loves to lay beside you and get his ears scratched and belly rubbed. When he gets to playing with his ball you'd think he was a 2 yr. old! He loves to roam the fenced in yard and roll in the grass. He doesn't do stairs well so if you have them he needs some help but his housetraining is excellent if he's let outside often enough. He gets along well with cats, kids, and other dogs. He's in good health and should have many more years of pleasure and love to give someone

Sadie is a wonderful companion with a definite personality who would make an extremely faithful and loving addition to a dog less home. She is completely house trained and will go for long periods of time without ever having an accident. Sadie loves to ride in a car! and will head for the door raring to go. She is easy to travel with and will sit in the passenger seat beautifully enjoying her ride.

We are very sad to say some of our adorable and loving seniors have passed. They were very much loved in their foster home and deseve to be remembered by those who cared for them until the end. Please visit our tribute page.
